Funding Opportunities for the Western IPM CenterUC DANR Seeks Applications for Pierce Disease Research Grants: Sponsor Deadline, April 16, 2004University of California Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) is soliciting research proposals for targeted research to address the threat of Pierce's Disease to the grape industry. The disease is caused by Xylella fastidiosa, a bacterium that clogs the xylem in plants (such as grape vine) and inhibits their ability to take in water and nutrients. The Pierce's Disease threat to the viticulture Industry has been exacerbated by the recent introduction and establishment of the highly efficient vector, the Glassy-winged Sharpshooter (SWSS), in Southern California and other areas of the Southwest United States. The Pierce's Disease research program is funded by a special grant to the University of California by the USDA Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES). This program will supplement ongoing research funded by the American Vineyard Foundation, the California Grape Industry, the California Department of Food and Agriculture and the USDA. Proposals will be considered for one or two years in duration. There will be approximately $1.8 million available for this cycle of the program. Announcement of proposals selected for funding will be made by June 21, 2004. See additional program information and guidelines.
